Basketball

 

Baketball is commonly nicknamed B-ball or hoops.

It is a team sport in which two teams of 5 players try to score points by throwing or "shooting" a ball through the top of a goal.

Basketball is one of the world's most popular and most viewed sports.

A regular rim is 18" in diameter and 10' feet high mounted to a backboard.

The team can score a field goal by throwing the ball through the goal.

A field goal scores 2 pts. for the team shooting the ball closer than the 3 pt. line.

If a player is outside the 3pt. line they score 3 points.

The team with the most points at the end of the game wins, but if there is a tie, there is additonal time added called overtime.

The ball can be moved up or around the floor by dribbling or passing the ball to another teammate.

There are violation though, one is traveling which means to pick the ball up or carry it and another is called double dribble which happens if a player picks the ball up then starts dribbling again.

  1. Some violations are usuallty called fouls, like a pesonal foul, making disruptive physical contact.
  2. Free throws are awarded to an offensive player if fouled while shooting.
  3. A technical foul gives the other team free throws.
  4. There are six positions and are issued according to abilities.
  5. The positions are center, small forward, power forward, point guard, and shooting guard.
